About Me

I must have found 1001 excuses not to go to the gym, or not to exercise.  Even with an impending wedding and European summer holiday, I still manage to convince myself that I don’t have to go to the gym tonight.  The evil devil that subsists somewhere in my mind is all, “Oh don’t worry, you’re too tired.  You’re too stressed.  You’re too busy.  Exercise isn’t going to work for you anyway, you’ll NEVER get fit.  Your gym clothes aren’t Lorna Jane.  Do you even have enough underpants to get you through the week?”.  Which segues into a rendition of Christina Aguilera’s, “You are beautifullllllll, no maaaaatter what they saaaaaaaaaaaay”.  Bastard.

I try to shut out that voice, tell myself to harden up and stop being a pussy.  I usually counter that voice with:-

  • You can be Miranda Kerr-esque!  Not likely buddy, she has heaps of moolah at her disposal, chefs to run her ridiculously expensive, high maintenance diet and Photoshop.
  • You can have an extra glass of wine this weekend!  Oh sure, that isn’t at all counter-productive.
  • You’ll feel so happy and swan around like a goddess! – I feel happier swanning in my couch, swathed in a blanket, watching Modern Family.

Sigh.  As you can see, it’s an ongoing battle.  However, I do have one booster up my sleeve. This probably sounds weird, but Gwyneth Paltrow is my total go-to gal for fitness motivation.  She’s just got that long, lithe but fit look about her – I know heaps of people hate on her for being so annoyingly perfect, but…she is!  So whenever I need that motivational push, I go on her website Goop and check out her fitness suggestions or healthy food options to keep me in line.

Of course, there’s also torturous motivation – like trying on a bikini, then realising my cellulite could possibly eat my stomach.  And there’s self-loathing motivation – like after I’ve finished a bowl of pasta, a bottle of wine and a bag of chips, the promises to myself that I will work it off tomorrow are seraphinely evangelical.

So what are your motivational tips?  I heard an awesome one from J on the weekend – sleep in your gym clothes, that way when you wake up you’re already ready.

I’d love to hear how you stay on the fitness track!

So looking forward to this weekend after a long week!  Tonight will be celebrating and catching up with family friends at a 21st at The London Club – it’s crazy to see kids who you’ve known since they were 5 turn 21!  Saturday night we’re helping clean out J and T’s fridge – we won’t see them for six weeks as they’re jetting off to Europe, so Bon Voyage!!  How exciting!

In the midst of the stress of wedding planning this week, I came across this quote from this amazing surprise carnival wedding:

There’s not too much say about the planning, other than “this too shall pass.” Whatever you’re stressed about is not that big of a big deal.

I need to tattoo this on the back of my eyelids – that, and “keep calm and carry on”.  Let people do what they want to do – you’re still marrying the love of your life.  OH, and wine is your best friend.

So have an awesome weekend – and if you’re in Brisbane, rug up, it’s getting chilly!

This series by photographer Henry Hargreaves is seriously awesome!  Collaborating with stylist Caitlin Levin, who composed the food items in the manner of Flemish still life paintings, Hargreaves photographed the strange food requests noted in musicians’  contracts when performing in major concerts (known as riders).

Hargreaves notes that what inspired these photos was “the way their requests manage to say something about the performers personality that words struggle to,” and the way they “were able identify with them through what they chose to eat and drink.”

How fascinating!  If you were a famous musician, what would your “rider” request be?  I reckon mine would be Lindt chocolate balls, pears with soft cheese, salt and vinegar chips and pork belly buns.

PS.  LOL @ the Foo Fighters’  request.

Lady Gaga: “Small plate of cheese (nonsmelly, nonsweaty), on ice.”

Frank Sinatra: “One bottle each: Absolute, Jack Daniel’s, Chivas Regal, Courvoisier, Beefeater Gin, white wine, red wine. Twenty-four chilled jumbo shrimp, Life Savers, cough drops.”

Foo Fighters: “Big-a** kielbasas that make men feel self-conscious.”

Nine Inch Nails: “Two boxes of corn starch.”

Billy Idol: “One tub ‘I can’t believe it’s not Butter!’, Pepperidge Farms Soft Baked Nantucket Chocolate Chip Cookies.”

Rihanna: “Hard-boiled eggs, turkey bacon, turkey sausage, at any time throughout the day. Please be prepared!”

Britney Spears: “Fish and chips, McDonald’s cheeseburgers without the buns, 100 prunes and figs, a framed photo of Princess Diana.”

Van Halen: “Herring in sour cream, large tube of KY jelly, M&M’s (Warning: absolutely no brown ones).”

Marilyn Manson: “Gummi bears.”

This photo proves my point that chilli is seriously the cure-all in my life.  I reach for chilli when I’m sick and need sinus-clearing, when I’m hungover and in need of some seriously spicy salve…and when puppies escape our backyard.  I’m babysitting C’s gorgeous dog, Spike, but Peach + Spike = serious mischief, as I found out yesterday when I got an amused phone call saying the puppies were on the loose.  I know from hilarious experience that Peach is not a fan of chilli, so, armed with Sriracha and some bricks, I set to the house holing up any possible escape routes and spraying Sriracha for good measure.  I’ll let you all know if they escape again!

Hope you all have wonderful weekends, and here’s some awesome posts from around the web.

Phillip Lim for Target is confirmed!!  Whoo hoo!!!!!!

An inspiring read for Mothers Day, plus some fabulous gift ideas – hope you all give your mum the love and hugs she deserves!

Cheddar jalapeno biscuits – yes please.

Things no one will tell fat girls…shout out for body love.  This is awesome.

Pictures of people who mock a photographer – people can be disappointing sometimes.

This dress is achingly cute!

Behind the scenes pics of The Empire Strikes Back – reminds me that I really need to book couch time for a Star Wars weekend.

I’m seriously not a fan of jello, but these sound really intriguing.  Add vodka maybe?

The Designer Says – a funky book of quotes and quips of designers.  Would make a cool coffee table book!

A sweetly comedic outlook on depression – well worth the read, an insight into a debilitating disease that affects so many of us.

I’m now less than a week out to a birthday that pushes me well into my twenties (well, glaring down the barrel to 30 is probably more like it), and this post got me thinking that I think about taking a few more (calculated) risky adventures.  Notice how I said “think about”.

I haven’t done many crazy things – I went canyoning in Slovenia, slipping down rock slides, abseiling down waterfalls and ziplining through jungles.  Mountain biking through Cat Ba island in Vietnam was a definite thrill.  Jumping off a three story boat in Ayvalik was seriously scary.

But I’d like to have a few more adventures – more crazy things to tell my grandkids.  Unfortunately since I had my laser eye surgery, I won’t be able to bungee or skydive but I’m sure I’d be able to find something!

So I’d love to know – what are the most extreme activities you’ve done?  I’d love to hear your adventures, and live vicariously through you if you’ve bungee’d or skydove!

How awesome have the Fashion Weeks this month been?  I seriously love Fashion Week – it combines my three great loves: Fashion, Travel and Photography!

Sorry for the radio silence!  It’s been super hectic on this end – I’ve been distracted by ridiculous wedding-related things that I never wanted to get distracted by!  I don’t care about colour schemes – I barely have any idea what colours look good together!  Fonts and paper thickness and letterpress vs thermography vs engraved – who gives a hoot?  Anyhow I hope to be back to regular posting soon, thanks for putting up with me!

Is anyone else obsessed with Game of Thrones as I am?  Have you read the books?  I have to say I’m borderline obsessive – I went through the same thing with Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

I can’t believe Season 3’s finally on the air – not that we’ve started watching it.  P and I agreed that we’re going to try to wait for the whole season to air and to watch the whole thing in a weekend.  We’ll see if we can stay strong!

Picture of Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen)

Love that signature Bruce Willis stare, don’t you?  He’s seriously the epitome of cool.  He was so dreamy in his hayday – I loved him in those Friends episodes where he was dating Rachel!

What are your plans this weekend?  Tonight I have to go shopping, and I’m hoping I’ll be successful in finding an awesome and wearable but still-conservative-enough-to-wear-to-a-cathedral-wedding dress for a good friend’s wedding tomorrow.  I’m charged with the duties of usher, pew bow-tie-er and mother-in-law babysitter.  There is a little pressure involved – after a phonecall giving us the rundown of duties last night (P is a groomsman), I dreamt that I was so late for the ceremony, I could only find and wear my jeans and I managed to offend the mother-in-law with a tongue in cheek remark.  Despite the dream though, I’m so excited, I can’t wait!

Hope you have lovely weekends, and here are some of my favourite links from around the web this week.

An article on the inspiration of Isabel Marant – “I am my own muse”.

The friendliest and unfriendliest nations for tourists.

The making of Pulp Fiction.

Definitely trying this recipe next – eggplant parmigiana.

And this recipe too, by the awesome Yotam Ottolenghi – baked orzo with eggplant and mozzarella.

An adorable Jennifer Lawrence interview with Vanity Fair – who doesn’t love this gal, seriously.

This place looks seriously amazing.

A mantra I try to live by weekly when doing my groceries.

Otherwordly – a blog about strange and beautiful words (via here) – cool words include “nazlanmak” and “jaaneman”.

Hot pink Chloe bag….my eyes just bulged, and my hands twitched for my wallet…

Just a few snapshots of a really fun weekend – involved a super teeny but totally crazy hen’s night, witnessing a good friend dress up in a Supre dress to go go-karting and suit up in a bunny outfit for his bucks, and taste testing a restaurant for our wedding bash.

The desserts of the restaurant (Pony Dining) were awesome (fig and rhubarb crumble tart and ice cream pops!), but I wasn’t able to try any of the fantastic-looking mains on offer – I was more interested in sinking my teeth into their wood-fired angus burger and fat chips to soak up the previous night’s excesses.  The hens was a definite success at Alfred & Constance, and if you’re wondering why I didn’t get any pictures of the buck in his dress/bunny outfit, well, I was just too busy doubled up with laughter to even think about snapping a pic!

Hope you all had wonderful weekends!

How crazy is it that it’s autumn in Australia already – particularly when us Brisbane people have barely had a summer!  I feel like I’ve been ripped off!  I’m stubbornly refusing to believe the temperatures are descending so I’m still browsing the new Spring/Summer fashion lines coming out in the northern hemisphere.  The dark colours and trenchcoats slowly making their way into department stores have NO appeal to me at all.

What are your plans this weekend?  I’m gearing up for my friend’s hen’s night on Saturday night – we’re headed to Alfred & Constance, but before that we’re going shopping and hopefully getting makeovers.  P’s going to the stag night, and I’m told the stag has been bought a bunny outfit and will be made to go-kart and club as a bunny.  So any Brisbane readers out there – watch out for a bunny in the Fortitude Valley!

Hope you have a great one, and here’s some of my favourite reads this week from around the web.

Video of a baby who is supposed to be napping but is practising diving instead – so so funny.

Wanting this dress but wishing the tomato red version was still in stock.

Continuing my Pinterest obsession…a great visual resource for disorganised me.

A gorgeous engagement shoot – would you have one?

Love Jennifer Lawrence.

Was never a fan of leather dresses until this moment.
